Rage, rage against the dying of the light’), Andersen’s photos feature the city of Sydney as an abstracted backdrop for a fragile human presence dwarfed by overwhelming architectural development and consumerism. In these moody black-and-white images, essayist Sandy Edwards notes that ‘people scurry about being literally exposed by light. They are struck by shafts of it between buildings like insects coming out for food.’ Andersen’s subjects are often solitary and lost in thought. Others are frozen by the camera as they rush to their next destination, huddled against the relentless presence of an unforgiving built environment. Andersen admits to being drawn to the ‘darker side’ of Sydney but his images are also marked by flourishes of whimsy and irony. As Edwards writes ‘it is reassuring to feel the artist’s presence in the images.’ Markus Andersen’s art practice encompasses documentary, conceptual and street photography across all forms of analogue and digital formats. He has held solo and collaborative exhibitions in New York, Paris, Toronto, Istanbul, United Kingdom and Sydney. The essayist Sandy Edwards is Curator and co-director of the renowned Stills Gallery in Sydney. She also works as an exhibiting artist, writer and independent curator.
